Byron Bay: Hikers and Paddlers Paradise

Another day in paradise. Byron Bay in the Spring is the ideal playground for adventure seekers. If you love kayaking through the ocean, trekking up rugged peaks, paddling along rivers and climbing waterfall trails, then read on my friend.

Our hiking and paddling tours take in classic Byron Bay experiences, but done right. We also up-the-game with our range of combined tours, that include both hinterland walks and ocean kayaking experiences. Paradise indeed!

Hikers Paradise

Trekking in the Byron hinterland offers so many advantages. Choose between hiking up Mt Warning either at sunrise or during the day, or meander through ancient rainforests to the base of Minyon Falls.

Mt Warning’s hiking trails lead to the highest summit in the Byron hinterland and on warm spring days the misty trail keeps you cool and relaxed. The summit views are incredible and utterly breath-taking, as well as Mt Warning’s wildlife. Sightings of goannas, turkeys, lyrebirds and wallabies are almost guaranteed.

Aside from Mt Warning, Minyon Falls in the Nightcap National Park is one of the hinterland’s most beautiful trails. Walk down to the fresh water rock pool and go swimming under the waterfall or just marvel at the valley, which hugs you from all sides. Then walk back up the looping trail, with the waterfall spraying you as you go. There are also a number of lookouts on the trail so you can take in the dizzying heights of this ancient cascade of water.

Hiking tours include:

Paddlers Paradise

Paddling in Byron Bay is almost a must-do for any visitor. The cliffs of Australia’s most easterly headland beckon and the secluded bay is ideal for a leisurely paddle. Not only will you have a blast sliding through the water, but you’ll also get to see some incredible marine life too. Byron Bay’s marine park is home to dolphins, rays, turtles and during the cooler months, migrating humpback whales. Byron Bay is made for kayaking adventures!

If you haven’t had your paddling fill after a Byron Bay ocean kayak, then next on the list has to be a Brunswick River kayak. There is so much beauty on this tour. From the clear river waters, to the tropical rainforest views and the pretty shore of the small coastal town that is Brunswick Heads.

Paddling tours include:

Double the Fun – Hike & Paddle

Combined tours are possibly the best ways to do both some padding and hiking either in a single day or over two.

Unspoilt Wildness: Best Byron Hinterland Tours

Once seen only as a beach holiday destination, Byron Bay’s hinterland is increasingly becoming just as popular as its beautiful beaches. With World Heritage listed national parks, rainforest, waterholes, small country towns, award-winning restaurants, diverse wildlife and some of Australia’s best hiking, Byron’s hinterland ticks all the boxes. Learn more about our not-to-be-missed Byron hinterland tours:

Big Day Out Byron Hinterland

Our Big Day Out Byron Hinterland tour is an unforgettable day of wilderness, sweeping views, postcard-perfect waterfalls and ancient rock pools. This signature tour gives adventurous travellers an intimate look at the iconic Minyon Falls and World Heritage listed Nightcap National Park.

Starting at the top of Minyon Falls, you leave the world as you know it and enter a world of ancient Bangalow Palm groves and subtropical rainforest. The loop trial threads its way through this insanely beautiful landscape to the base of the falls; and while any vantage point of Minyon Falls is stunning, none is more rewarding than from the bottom. Watch Minyon Falls sheer tower of water in all its heart-thumping glory, while taking a swim in the big, clear rock pool or lying back on the gigantic prehistoric rocks.

Then make your way back up to the top of the falls where you’ll see kookaburras, bowerbirds, possums, bandicoots and maybe a carpet python (or two). Once at the top, refuel with a BBQ lunch before arriving at the hinterland town of Bangalow. This beautiful and historic village is perfect for sitting back with a latte or hitting the streets for some of the best shopping in the Byron area.

Mount Warning Sunrise and Day Walk

Next up, is our awe-inspiring Mount Warning tours.

At 1156m high, Mount Warning looms above the region and is home to a wide range of Australian native animals from wombats and platypus to koalas and goannas. The trail itself is well constructed (which makes the walk suitable for kids); however you may find the weather constantly changing. The indigenous nickname for Mount Warning is the ‘the cloud catcher’ – one minute you might find yourself walking over dry rocky outcrops while the next, gentle rainforest mist.

The Mount Warning Sunrise Walk has you up and starting before dawn. This four hour hike takes you to the summit of the highest mountain in the region to watch the sunrise over the Pacific Ocean and Cape Byron. By dawn you’ll literally be on the rooftop of the East Coast of Australia, with the most dramatic 360 degree views. On this tour you also won’t have to worry about taking any camping equipment or even food. We’ll provide everything you need. You can either choose to sleep in a tent under the stars or in a cosy cabin.

The day walk offers the same exhilarating experience, but without the overnight camping and you’ll be up and back all in a day. The great thing about both these summit walks is they offer up hard-won rewards – from the thrill of making it to the top to a deeper connection with nature to the sheer joy of being alive! It’s pure magic.

Named by National Geographic as one of the ’10 Best Mountain Climbs in Australia’, it is an adventure of a lifetime!
